To Whom it May Concern,
Re: Sport of Muaythai

I am very proud to advise that the IFMA was accepted into the membership of the General Association of International Sports Federations ("GAISF") at the GAISF's 2006 International Conference as the peak international body representing Muaythai.

Muaythai (also known as Thaiboxing) which has long been Thailand's national sport is now practiced across the world. Muaythai - is not only practiced as a sport - many people practice Muaythai for self defense and fitness. Muaythai is widely respected for its historical and cultural foundations dating back 2000 years.

IFMA's constitution has been drawn to clearly establish and maintain the independence of Muaythai as a separate sport and martial art. To this end our constitution clearly outlines that member status will only be granted to a national Federation which seeks to represent the sport of Muaythai and no other sport or martial art.

There has been some confusion at National Olympic Committee, National Government and national sports' umbrella body level, that Kickboxing and Muaythai are the same sport (or are so similar) that the one national Federation should represent both sports. At IFMA's World Congress in June 2006 held in Bangkok our Executive was advised by a number of our member nations that this confusion has made it difficult for the sport of Muaythai to develop.

This letter has been drawn specifically to advise you that the sports of Muaythai and Kickboxing are treated by the international sporting community as separate sports. This separation has been unequivocally endorsed by the separate membership status granted to both Kickboxing and Muaythai by the GAISF. IFMA now seeks to ensure that this clear endorsement by the GAISF results in the orderly separation of the respective sports in Hungary.

This move to clear separation has been highlighted by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding ("MOU") between the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations ("WAKO") - the Kickboxing organization which has received conditional GAISF recognition and IFMA to signify the international endorsement of the separation of the sports.

I would be most pleased to answer any queries you may have.

Yours Faithfully,

Stephan Fox
General Secretary
